Our angels were looking after us today. Sari and I have been out of cell phone coverage for approx 4 days, and hadn’t seen a TV since we left Reefton so had no idea about the coming cyclone.
Thank you for your texts and phone messages. It was quite by accident I decided to check my phone for cell phone coverage not far out of Wanaka, (we were enjoying riding the cycle trail from Lake Hawea to Wanaka – a must do). Low and behold there were many messages and one in particular was from my brother Les (who lives in Cromwell). When I returned his call, his wife Carol insisted on coming to Wanaka to pick us up and take us to their home in Cromwell. There was no way she was going let us stay in our tents tonight and we weren’t that keen either!! We had tried our best to find any sort of accommodation in Wanaka, but like so many other towns in this part of New Zealand – completely booked out.
So thank you for your concerns, we are well and being very well looked after. We will sleep better tonight knowing we won’t be blown or washed away. Take care and thanks again for your concerns and thoughts. GoldCard gal 🙂

Hi Heather. another great read and so pleased you both arrived safely to Cromwell. I have passed your blog onto the Brooks, Larsens and Fergusons.
It was another hot weekend for Art Deco and great to see the fabulous vintage cars from around the world listen to the music and enjoy all the people dressed up.
Take care. xxM

Wonderful news Heather we were very concerned last night wondering how far you have ventured since your last post. Wonderful part of the country from Lake Hawea to Wanaka, well done to you both. Stay safe Love CArly and Tony

So glad you are safe. I know how quickly dry bed streams can become raging torrents.

Hi Heather,
I just love your blog, photos, interesting stories, good progress too!
Blow me down, you missed hearing about Gita, road to takaka washed out, so glad your not there but safe near Hokitika.
I’m doing Bridge to Nowhere next weekend and Hastings/Napier at Easter.
Interesting how difficult it is to find accommodation.
Keep up with all that cycling and hope the weather is ok for you.
