Twice yearly I visit The Channon and Byron Bay. In The Channon I spend precious time with my granddaughters – Delilah and Poppy and of course their parents. I treasure the special times I share with Delilah and Poppy. In the mornings Delilah loves to climb into my bed for cuddles, stories and chats – I’m very lucky. This visit we spent time making Christmas decorations – which we all enjoyed. The Channon is a mixture of rain forest regeneration and macadamia plantations. The country side is lush and the terrain is rolling. A stunning part of NSW.
Byron Bay
My son and his partner live here. Byron Bay is the most eastern point in Australia. It has a variety of stunning beaches and little bays that enables a variety of surfing and water activities. Plus it has many walking options which is why I love my ‘time out’ here. These walks enable me to refocus on my life and my business. I always leave feeling refreshed and motivated.
One of my favorite activities is to walk bare foot along the sandy beaches, of which Byron has many. I love the feeling of the sand against the soles of my feet. How each step seems to massage the sole of my feet, and right up through my body – it is heaven and quite hard work because I like to walk in the softest of sand.
Byron Bay is a tourist town and what I appreciate most is the mix of permanent locals; from the wealthy to the alternative life styler – a reminder of the hippy era, plus the many and varied backpackers and travelers. No building is higher than three stories which adds to its charm.
Favorite walk – Lighthouse
Byron Bay has a stunning lighthouse, check this out: Byron-Bay-lighthouse-everything-need-know. There are a variety of different routes you can take to get to the lighthouse, depending on whether you want shade or not. You can walk initially along the beach and then onto a walking track or you can walk along Lawson St and then onto Lighthouse Road. If in doubt just following the walkers – they all seem to do the circuit.
There are plenty of drinking fountains along the way to quench the thirst, therefore no need to take a water bottle. Take time to enjoy the stunning views and if you are lucky you may even see whales and/or dolphins swimming in the Pacific Ocean below.
Hole in the Wall – great coffee & food ‘to go’
On your return to the town center call in and get your coffee and healthy snack from Hole in the Wall café, located on Lawson Street just about opposite the double story Balcony Hotel. They offer a variety of buns, rolls and other ‘food to go’ options, all freshly made each day on the premises. The staff are friendly and always ready for a chat.
BBQ – get locally sourced meat
Byron Bay provides a number of free BBQ’s dotted all along the main beach front for everyone to use. Trevor Mead butchery have a large selection of meats to choose from, and the service and attention you receive is ‘award winning’.
The Book Room
When in Byron Bay a good book never goes a miss. The Book Room (right) is my favorite location to hang out and browse. There are 1,000’s of books to view including a large children’s section. The staff are very helpful and passionate about books. Enjoy.
Best time to visit Byron Bay
For me it’s autumn or winter. It is now December and it is hot. While the early mornings can be very pleasant, it doesn’t take long to heat up. Thankfully there is often a sea breeze which does help. It certainly makes me appreciate our New Zealand climate.
When you visit Byron Bay I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences. Till next time!
