Quote for the day:
“Winners are not people who have never failed, but people who never quit.”
Welcome to day 28. Another foggy start and so much colder than yesterday. My HRV system is not working in transferring the heat from the attic in my home to my living quarters. Gee I can’t get over how cold my home is when the HRV is not working. And to think I have put up with that coldness for so many years! After wasting quite a bit of time chatting online to a customer service representative, the problem is still not solved. So hopefully it won’t be too long before a technician can come and fix the issue. Hence tonight I’ve got my wood-burner stoked up and the fire is roaring.
Who watched Paul Henry last night? His interview with Nick Mowbray was excellent. What an inspirational and down-to-earth young man, offering advice to wanna-be and business owners in NZ. I could have listened to him for the whole episode. What were your thoughts?
The sun was very welcome this afternoon. I was able to finish one of my to-do list items. Replacing the edging of one of my raised vegetable gardens. I debated about getting untreated timber like I’d always done, but of course we’re in a lockdown. The idea to use what I already had at home, bricks and pavers came to me while out bike riding. It’s not perfect but it will last a lot longer than untreated timber. Would love to have had railway sleepers but the price of them encouraged me to think of alternative solutions. Now I need to plant my broad bean seeds and a cover crop. You gardeners out there, do you sow a cover crop for winter and if so, what do you plant?

Today’s feature image
Today’s feature image comes from my Zimbabwean friends Meg & Mike’s garden who are across the road. It’s always exciting to see new bulbs popping their heads up and waiting for the bubs to open up and display their beauty. What are your favourite bulbs?
My Feijoa ice cream
I finally made my feijoa ice cream yesterday and was able to sample it last night. It is super delicious. Highly recommend making it. 🙂
Seven simple ways to bring luxury getaway comfort to you home
My blogging friend Denise of “Magic Moments” sent me the above link thinking that some of my readers may like to add or bring a little luxury to their lockdown experience. Let’s know if you try any of the suggestions. I like the idea of “baby your feet with the perfect slippers”. What appeals to you?
Signs of autumn
Today’s signs of autumn come from “Patricia-Rose”, “I-Solution” and Brad from Taranaki. Thank you for your contributions.
How has your day 28 been? Love to read about your thoughts, events or happenings.

Lockdown day 28.
Reflections on the lockdown:
1. Half of us are going to come out of this quarantine as amazing cooks. The other half with a drinking problem
2. I used to spin that toilet paper like I was on Wheel of Fortune, now I turn it like I’m cracking a safe
3. I need to practice social distancing with the refrigerator
4. I still haven’t decided where to go for ANZAC day – the living room or the bedroom
5. Every few days, try your jeans on just to make sure they still fit. Pajamas will have you believe all is well. Don’t be fooled
6. I don’t think anyone expected when we changed the clocks, we’d go from Standard Time to the Twilight Zone
7. This morning, I saw our neighbour talking to her cat again. It was obvious she thought her cat understood her. When I got back into the house, I told the dog and we both laughed.
8. My body has absorbed so much soap and disinfectant lately that when I pee, it cleans the toilet.
9. Its Thursday. I’m so excited it’s time to take out the garbage. What should I wear?
10. I hope the weather is good tomorrow for my trip to “Puerto Backyarda” as I’m getting really tired of “Los Livingroom”
11. Classified ad:
Single man with toilet paper seeks woman with hand sanitizer for good clean fun.
12. Better 6 feet apart than 6 feet under….!!
The Tour de Garage was neutralised today.
Hell, I did twice as many real Km’s yesterday and so thought that I deserved a break.
So this afternoon when no one was looking we snuck out and broke the law!
As we are in the “vulnerable group,“ I have been doing the one off weekly trip to shops and my wife has been in the house without any outside activity at all for more than 4 weeks.
So today we went by car to look at the autumn leaves before they are all gone.
20 minutes of uninterrupted calm in a beautiful Waikato golden autumn.
It was a short drive away from the suburbs up behind the zoo. The animals are all puzzled wondering where all the humans are?
Soon we found them.
I ride these lanes regularly and at no time have I ever seen so many people walking, cycling, pushing prams etc.
Any more, and the roads will need to be re sealed.
Back home for a cold plate of smoked salmon and salad and I think we will now be able to make it through to next Tuesday.
Unhurried In Hamilton

Another entertaining post thank you “Unhurried in Hamilton”. Love the reflections on lockdown – well done. It is interesting isn’t it the number of people you see out and about on our roads with family members enjoying a more relaxed life style – long may that last. 🙂

Hi Heather, the boyfriend sows mustard seeds in the garden then digs them in in the spring if that is any help. Seems to add the required nutrients to the soil. Lazy day here today, Nick and the boys called in to collect feijoas for themselves and the neighbours. We had gluten free piklets for morning tea which left a bit to be desired, however the boys ate them all up so they were probably not too bad. We kept our distance which is hard for 7 and 9 year olds, even harder for grandparents who really feel like they need a hug. The youngsters seem to have a very good understanding of what this virus means so guess it has been a learning curve about germs for them. Will be interesting to see how things work once we are down to level 3, hopefully a second wave will not eventuate but I think we will have to be careful for a while. Off to raid the garden for dinner. Great idea putting surplus fruit outside the gate for people to gather and use we had some quinces down our street waiting for an enthusiastic cook to make some quince jelly. I read the recipe and made more chutney instead much easier.

Thanks for the tip about mustard seeds, you certainly have a great ‘boyfriend”. I think mustard seeds help purify the soil or something similar. Sounds wonderful to have had Nick and boys this morning – understand about the gluten free piklets – they’d be a bit like rubber where they? You’ve been amazing “Carly of Tamahere” with your daily comments – thank you 🙂

good morning Heather! I dont always take the time to read your blog but I did this morning and I love all the autumn pics. I have set up a facebook group for the residents of Lee Martin Road during the lockdown with the idea that it will foster more community spirit. It seems like its me doing all the work on the page as there are not a lot of comments or posts by others – one or two regulars but not much more than that. So I wanted to comment on your page as you put a lot of effort into your posts and they really are a good read so thanks! I was very proud of our local Mowbray celeb – such a great positive guy eh – very refreshing indeed. I have started a table outside our property with any extra fruits and veges to give away to others as they pass, we even had a wool and fluffy sheep on it to start with, its a good feeling to give a smile to others eh! Hope your riding is going well. I completed the mountains to sea ride along with 7 other women just before the lockdown so am still thinking back on the ride and the great memories. I Better get back to work heather so enjoy your day!

Thank you Jacky and great to hear from you. Your mountains to sea ride sounded fun, look forward to catching up on that. Once this lockdown is over, lets have a coffee or something similar! 🙂
