Quote for the day:
“Life is about change. Sometimes it is painful. Sometimes it is beautiful. But most of the time, it’s both.”
by Lana Lang
Welcome to day 23. As the four weeks of lockdown draws closer to the end, there is much debate about whether we’re going to move to level 3 or not next week. I guess if you are a small business owner you’ll be thinking about how you can work “safe” and if so, what will that mean for you and your employees and what will the cost be to your business. Difficult times ahead. I was chatting with one of my neighbours this morning (who had sold his electrical business late last year) and he was sooo relieved to not be a small business owner today. Not much help but we are thinking of all you SMEs at this difficult time. What are your thoughts regarding going to level 3?

Kim’s Rusks recipe
I spoke about this recipe last night. It has been given to me by my elderly Zimbabwean neighbours, who class it as one of their ‘reminders of home’ and when they eat it, it brings back happy memories. It is my pleasure to share it with you and I’d love to hear from you if you make it. I usually half the recipe when I make it.
Mix together:
5 cups of All Bran Flakes
1 tsp Baking Powder (not necessary)
Pinch salt
4 cups of SR flour or (may be 1/2 of SR and 1/2 plain)
Melt 500 gms butter
Add
1 cup sugar
2 1/2 cups plain unsweetened yoghurt (625 mls)
Then add 3 eggs
Add butter mix to dry ingredients
Add currents (approx 250 gms or sultanas) (my friends don’t like any added fruit)
Pour into deep, well greased pan (warm pan in preheated oven to spread & melt butter)
Bake @ 150o C for 40 – 60 minutes
Remove from oven and cool in pan for 30 minutes
Turn onto board and cool further. Cut into squares and place them slightly apart on rack and dry in warm oven (60 – 80oC) overnight till dry and brittle. I do this during the day.
Mixed dough is wet and sloppy.
Update to Feijoa Ice-cream recipe
Note: it should be 1 1/2 cups of mashed feijoas not 1cup.
1. Whip 1/2 pint of cream
2. Beat 2 egg whites
3. Mix 2 egg yolks and 1 tsp vanilla
4. Mix and leave overnight 11/2 cup mashed feijoas 3/4 cup sugar
Add 3 to 4
Then add 2 to (3 and 4)
Then add 1 to (2 and 3 and 4) and freeze.

Signs of autumn
Thank you “Sharon & Alicia of Flagstaff” and “I-Solution Wanaka” for today’s signs of autumn. I’m so enjoying receiving your photos of your autumn scenes. Aren’t the roses stunning?
I’m going to watch another Jason Bourne movie tonight, so that is it for day 23. Trust you’ve had a great day and look forward to hearing about your happenings and adventures tomorrow.
Be patient and kind with yourself and everybody in your bubble. Take care Goldcard Gal 🙂

Hi Heather, Tony and I enjoyed the Jason Bourne movie last night, what a man!!!! and what a driver!!! I think it will be Breakfast at Tiffany’s tonight a bit more sedate. Yipee nice to see some sunshine, enjoyed a short bike ride this morning and managed to keep dry. However as you always say, you cannot get wetter than wet. We are working on fire wood this afternoon, wood splitter is working overtime and I will be out to help stack in a little while. Meantime I am writing memories for the kids which is an interesting undertaking. Yes we are hoping that for the sake of so many small business owners, we will move to level 3 by Wednesday. What a hard decision for all concerned it will be very hard to please everyone. Enjoy the sunshine great to be able to get outside again after a couple of days less active.

Great to hear about your happenings “Carly of Tamahere”. Isn’t fire wood gathering & stacking always fun – one of my favourite things. Writing your memories sounds a wonderful thing to do during this lockdown, do you find it therapeutic? Thank you 🙂

For us it was going to be the Meg Hut in the hills between Cardrona and Lowburn one weekend in March. Beautiful clear running stream near by and lots of tussock for neighbour’s. If restrictions are lifted it is now getting borderline to visit as temperatures have dropped quite a lot overnight. Yesterday on our walk we discovered a path that goes above our place and almost all the way to town: that would be about 4ks. We couldn’t believe how we had not seen it before. As the guys said in the UK we wouldn’t be doing a blog (nor seeing paths)if not for these extraordinary circumstances. It’s down to the lake for a stroll. The beloved and I are 39 years married today. My goodness the time has flown by.Maybe too fast: Yours I-Solution: 👫

Thank you for updates “I-Solution” Firstly congratulations on your wedding anniversary – well done 39 years! Meg Hut sounds a worthwhile walk, must check it out. So there are benefits to being in lockdown – you found a new track. 🙂

Still not able to subscribe. No worries. I just go into your website. I think everyone looking forward to Level 3. How different it will be though, I don’t know. Loved the center rose- pink and marbled with maroon. Will be so happy when I can put my boots back on and get out for a hike.
